Little Man Tate - Nothing Worth Having Comes Easy - Album Review

Oct 2nd 2008
Album Review By Andrew Fisher
Album Review:
After the success of debut album "About What You Know" and top 20
single "Sexy In Latin", Little Man Tate could have been forgiven for
thinking they were headed for bigger things. Unceremoniously dropped by
the V2 label, they regrouped and started work on their second album.
Recorded over six month in Sheffield's 2Fly Studios, this is a confident
and bold comeback from the band.

It all kicks off in fine style with "Money Wheel", an upbeat song about the
boredom of the 9 to 5. June's lead single "What Your Boyfriend Said" tells
the story of an illicit relationship and snatched moments together.
"Reflection In His Sunglasses" is a bittersweet tale of the girl that got
away, name-checking famous women in comparison. Another woman is on
Jon Wilder's mind in "Shot At Politics", contrasting a short relationship with
the long-term aims of someone who is politically motivated. "Hey Little
Sweetie" bounces along with energy and a great chorus. Music is at the
heart of "Joined By An iPod",

A couple drifting apart but still united by their love of the same music.
"Face On A Wall" feels darker with its angular and jerky riff, while "A Little
Heart" rushes headlong with its plea to be taken seriously. "Back Of The
Pub Quiz" reminds me of Pulp's Disco 2000, talking about someone who
moved away and came back to the area. "London Skies London Eyes" is
another fast number, before the melancholy "Shoulder To Sigh On"
rounds off the album.

This is a fantastic set of songs, the band's playing doing justice to
Wilder's philosophical and wry lyrics. There is an honesty and sincerity
about the songs, something lacking in some recent high-profile albums. It
sounds like the best of Britpop without descending into caricature, great
guitar riffs and rhythms giving everything depth. Sheffield can be proud of
Little Man Tate.
