Stone Gods - Silver Spoons & Broken Bones - Album Review

Album Review By Ian S. Russell
Bio:
Stone Gods have quite a history with Scorpio Review, we've joined the
guys on the road twice now and each time they have blown us away!
Stone Gods are a band formed by ex-members of defunct UK hard rock
band The Darkness. The University of East Anglia's Student's union had
hosted the band at The Waterfront, Norwich on January 30, 2008 with
support from the Scottish band Serpico. This date was the last on their
tour and was a total sellout with around 500 people turning up and
supporting them.
They supported Thunder at The University of East Anglia on November
29, 2007. The band are also playing support on five dates of Thin Lizzy's
current tour.
The band's first release is a limited edition EP titled Burn the Witch which
was released on February 25, 2008.[6] According to the official Stone
Gods website, the EP sold out within one day. It also reached number 2
in the Radio 1 Rock charts.
Their debut album, titled 'Silver Spoons & Broken Bones', is expected to
be released on July 7th, THIS IS OFFICIALLY THE 1ST REVIEW OF
THAT ALBUM!
TRACK 1 "Burn The Witch"
By now, most of you SHOULD have heard this track, the smash hit EP -
that sold out in under a day in most shops was released on Feb 25th,
and since then the guys have been playing it on tour non stop!
The track is a true regression back to real heavy metal, no hardcore
dancing here! Metal as it should be, catchy guitar hooks combined with
deep adrenaline filled vocals!
Theres not alot more to say about this track over than its complexity and
arrangement is amazing, the way the song can effectively be broken up
into 4 or 5 different songs but ye it flows flawlessly, Truly amazing!
.
TRACK 2 "Don't Drink The Water"
"Don't Drink The Water" is another hallmark metal anthem, fast passed
guitar screams combined with a strong guitar backing kicks the song off.
Dan adds his almost Iron Maiden like vocals, into the mix, with Group
vocals giving the song a little more power.
The bridge to the song here deserves special mention as I've never
heard anything like it on any metal album I've ever heard in my life, it
mixes the backing guitar riff with an almost Caribbean theme overlay - its
worth buying the album just for that 5 seconds!
TRACK 4 "You Brought A Knife To A Gunfight"
This track has also gained quite alot of respect in the metal community,
and was 1st released at the same time as "Burn The Witch" - on the
Stone Gods last EP. Again the track is overrun with face melting guitar
solos, flawless vocal talent and just pure classic metal influenced fun!
Guitar effects are also put to good use here, and one does really wonder
how in the short time the band have been around they got the time to
produce such a great array of tracks!
TRACK 5 "Magdalene Street"
"Magdalene Street" is the 1st slow track of the new album, and proves
without question that Dan's voice is not just suited for to the heavy metal
anthems, but he can also take a moment to produce what can only be
described as a singer/songwriter classic.
Guitar solo's are still used to great effect as a bridge to the track, but this
track is a much more subdued affair. With an almost country and western
feel to it.
TRACK 12 "Knight Of The Living Dead"
"Knights Of The Living Dead" Will be the 1st single release from "Silver
Spoons & Broken Bones" it gets off to a slow start compared to majority
of the album, and in my opinion is actually 1 of the weakest tracks of the
album. Dan takes center stage here, and the guitars seem to take a
backseat - al thought a nice little lead riff makes up the bridge. Still this
does make me wonder why this track was picked for Single release when
tracks like "Don't Drink The Water" have been overlooked.
ALBUM "Silver Spoons & Broken Bones"
We are incredibly honnored to be the 1st ever review of the Stone Gods
new album, but this dosen't mean we will pull any punches in review, as
we never do... But, actually i dont think there are any punches to pull...
I'm not going to write a long outro here, I'll keep i blunt as that seems to
be the message of the album... This is by far 1 of the most enjoyible and
simply great albums i have ever been sent!
10/10 - THE BEST NEW METAL BAND OUT THERE!
