Hot Chip - One Life Stand
Album Review - Feb 1st 2010
Album Review By Ian S. Russell
Intro:
My 1st experience of electro-poppers 'Hot Chip' was a little
over a year ago, seeing them live on the Johnathan Ross
show, since then I have found them 1 of the only bands with
pop-overtones that I don't find physically annoying, in fact they
are 1 of my number one bands to simply stick on and chill out
to, this album has been eagerly awaited by me, lets hope it
lives up to that wait.
TRACK 1 "Thieves In The Night"
As with most 'Hot Chip' album intros this 1 features the almost
ever-present synth board they seem to be addicted to. With a
low bass drum kicking in shortly after building the track up for
the calming docile tones of front man Alexis Taylor this track
builds my hope even more for the rest of the album, although
nothing revolutionary, this is still a solid track to start the album.
TRACK 4 "One Life Stand"
The title track of the album, and lead single 'One Life Stand' is
in my opinion a masterpiece - that word has been used far to
many times in the music world, but I really do think the words 'I
only wanna be your One Life Stand, tell me do you stand by
your man' is pure genius. Again the track features much more
synth-bass action, and takes the boys from 'Hot Chip' in the
ever so under-rated direction of the Dub-Step world, it
definitely has a Dub-Step feel to it, adding in Jamaican drums
and electro effects throughout this song lives up to the name
and it in itself could also be classed as a masterpiece. The
almost haunting bridge adds a new breath of life into a song
that to be fair at 5:24 long, could seem to drag - but simply
doesn't thanks to the pure genius that is 'Hot Chip'.
TRACK 5 "Brothers"
Brothers commences to the sound of the oh so familiar Hot
Chip Synth sound, joined by the mono-tonal vocals of Alexis
Taylor & co, and eventually an electro-drum backing... The
track never seems to get going really, and does seem a little
bit of a let down compared to the rest of the album.
TRACK 8 "We Have Love"
'We Have Love' drops the pop-electro feel for more of an
alternative almost 'prodigy-like' sound to it with the band
providing haunting and some would say even hypnotic vocals.
This track really might be called a move off track for Hot Chip
fans, yes it does still keep the overall electro feel of Hot Chip,
but really does still sound different - in a good or negative way,
I'm not quite sure...
TRACK 9 "Keep Quiet"
The 9th track of the album entitled 'Keep Quiet' seems to live
up to its name, having quite a subdued feeling throughout, this
although a shock to the system after hearing 'We Have Love'
is quite a welcome change in tempo, especially as the lyrics
are now decipherable. Overall track 9 again does feel like its
lacking something when compared to tracks like 'One Life
Stand' but is still a very nice track to have on in the
background.
ALBUM "One Life Stand"
I'm not really sure what to make of this album, after the 1st
listen I was really impressed, but under the numerous plays I
give a CD before the final review it did seem somewhat of an
empty album. When compared to the past album 'Made In The
Dark' its even more of a let down, Being a mix between
mellow-catchy-electro that Hot Chip are famous for producing,
and a heavier, and even aggressive electro sound that lends
itself more to the sound of Prodigy, this album would be nether
mellow enough for Hot Chip fans, nor heavy enough for the
likes of heavy-electro bands like Prodigy... The 1 saving grace
is the stunning single 'One Life Stand' - which clearly is
standing way above the rest of the bellow-par music on the
rest of the album.
