Alkaline Trio - This Addiction
Album Review - Feb 7th 2010
Album Review By Ian S. Russell

Intro:
Well, Well, Well, the Chicago based 3-sum are hitting our
shelves once again this year, with what they promise to be 'a
return to our Punk-Rock roots'. I've never been a die-hard
Alkaline Trio fan, but have always been surrounded by my
friends - who are for the most part ALL die hard Alkaline Trio
fans, They've been waiting for this album for quite some time,
lets see if its going to live up to there hopes!

TRACK 1 "This Addiction"
Alkaline Trio certainly live up to there promise here, it may not
be the screech-ridden works that old school punk fans would
be hoping for, but pop-punk fans will not be disappointed here.

Nothing really stands out that much, the group vocals work
well, but the song seems to be lacking that 'guitar-hook' that
most Pop-punk songs rely on. Overall the track is good - not
great, its to well produced to sound like a rough-punk classic,
and yet to empty to be a real pop-punk classic.

TRACK 3 "Lead Poisoning"
The third track from the album: 'Lead Poisoning' is much the
same, and also seems to be lacking any real depth... Sorry
guys but this album really isn't converting me so far.

TRACK 4 "Dead On The Floor"
Now this seems to be the track where the album turns around
slightly, its defiantly a change of past from the past 3 tracks,
the guys seem to have stepped down a gear - and not in a bad
way. Matt Skiba provides nice clear vocals, that seem alot less
rushed than the past tracks... Odd for me to say this about a
punk band, but Matt's vocals really do seem to suit the slow
pace songs better.

TRACK 6 "Off The Map"
Another good track from the album, Matt again provides slower
vocals, with a nice amount of group backing also adding to the
track. This track also seems to be 1 of the only tracks of the
album with a convincing guitar-hook, Not a bad track at all.

TRACK 8 "Eating Me Alive"
Contrary to what the track title would suggest this is actually
another relatively slow-paced track, which again suits Matt's
vocals alot more than the early album tracks. The track has an
almost 80's feel backing-wise with a synth providing the bridge
& majority of the chorus. This is another track that showcases
the great production work provided by Dan Andriano.

ALBUM "This Addiction"
'This Addiction' is an odd little album, not quite falling into the
punk or pop-punk genera, as quite simply it isn't quite good
enough at being ether. Thats not to say this is a terrible album,
The production work is great, some of the tracks do show
promise and even the worst element (The Vocals) do have
there little spots of brightness... Sadly I don't feel this is in
anyway good enough to call the album good, It hardly
managers to scrape a mediocre rating, It is simply to dull.

5 / 10 - Sorry guys but this really isn't exciting enough to
live-up to competition, let alone the hopes of your fans
