Album Review By Ian S. Russell
BIO:
We don't really think this is needed for The Scouts, but just in
case you have somehow failed to be attacked by the 1000
plays a second that 'Shes So Loverly' 'Elvis Ain't Dead' and
most recently 'Heartbeat' then, Scouting For Girls are a
Indie-Pop (Brit-pop if you will) band from London, Comprising
of Roy Stride (vocals, keyboards, guitar), Greg Church use
(bass guitar) & Peter Ellard (percussion) - There, all filled in?
Lets see what the latest pop-tastic album has to offer!
Track 1 - 'This Aint A Love Song'
In true Scouting For Girls fashion, they begin the new album
with the lead single, that has already received massive air-play
around the UK. 'This Aint A Love Song' is no huge change in
style for the Scouts, somewhat meaningful sounding lyrics, if a
little clichéd to say the least, combined with a jumpy-pop
backing. Scouting fans will love this track, as will most of
todays youth that sadly eats up whatever has a nice simple
beat & melodic lyrics... Thats not to say the track is bad,
of-cause Scouting For Girls are great at what they produce,
pop fans will love this single.
Track 2 - 'Little Miss Naughty'
I've selected this track as the intro at least clearly sounds so
much different from what people expect from the Scouts, with
heavy use of autotune, the chorus line of 'Mirror, Mirror, On
The Wall, How Could I Be Such A Fool, Mirror Mirror On The
Wall, I Cannot See Myself Anymore' could have been lifted
from any of the tracks produced by so called R'n'B artists on
the charts - The rest of the track continues in the normal,
poppy, catchy fashion.
Track 4 'Famous'
This track again features heavy use of auto-tune, those
mummy loving Scouts seem to be trying to attract a totally
different audience with this album, I'm thinking they are trying
to lead towards the teenage girl audience... Sadly this track
has more chance of being played in Holiday camps around the
world... Are they really aiming for the under 5 audience?
I'm not so sure there that into buying music...
Track 6 'On The Radio'
I'm starting to think during the mixing of this album the
producer accidentally glued down the autotune button... Thats
all I have to say here...
Track 9 '1 + 1'
During the intro to this track, you could be forgiven for thinking
your CD player has changed CD's, The intro sounds like a
totally different album... Sadly thats where it ends, and once
again the Roy Stride )Vocals) commences his feeling-less
lyrical dribble about girls, and nothing more
Album 'Everyone Wants To Be On TV' Summery
I never, ever called myself a Scouting For Girls fan, but always
could at least stand listening to there last album, granted it was
full of pretty emotionless pop ramblings, and was far to
repetitive, but was never on this level.
The main problems with this album is its single-dimensional,
repetitive subject: Females, There have been many successful
albums with that subject, even the somewhat similar albums
from pop artists that have long been forgotten (Plane White
T's spring to mind) the only difference if with bands like the
Plane White T's, the lyrics did at least feel somewhat from the
heart.
I do feel bad partially for this review, as the Scouts are very
nice people in person & we have joined them on tour a few
times to say the least, But the sad fact is this album is 100%
trash - Sadly looking at the current state of the charts, it will be
in good company when it joins them in the top 10.
2 / 10 - I think the review says it all...
