Intro:
Avenged Sevenfold are set to release their 5th studio album, “Nightmare”,
on 27th  July. This is the first album to be released after the tragic death of
Jimmy “The Rev” Sullivan, who died in December of last year from
unknown causes. “Nightmare” is the title track and, first single from the
new album, which was intended to be a concept album, but changed after
the passing of The Rev. “Nightmare” was one of only two songs that had
lyrics completed, these have been left unchanged to honour The Rev.

“Nightmare” is the follow up to the self-titled album, in which Avenged
explored many different ideas, making it completely different from their
previous work. The band has described the next album as 'An album half
about The Rev and half about what The Rev wanted the album to be like.'

Track Review:
The track starts with a slow and eerie piano intro, before violins can be
heard playing softly, much like the intro to previous single “Critical
Acclaim”. Suddenly guitars, bass and drums kick in, for which Avenged
Sevenfold are known for. It is full of duelling guitar solos from Synyster
Gates and Zacky Vengeance, as well as typical Avenged-style drums
which The Rev wrote, but were recorded by Mike Portnoy (Dream Theatre).

The vocals are a mix of singing sections combined with small screaming
sections. The song is full of amazing lyrics, “Dragged ya down below, down
to the devils show, To be his guest forever (Peace of mind is less than
never)!” which are spooky and dark and give people the chills while
listening to it, These lyrics take on extra meaning now knowing that they
were written prior to the death of the Jimmy

Overall the single is a mix of both older and newer styles that Avenged
have tried, making it suited to both old and new fans of the band. The
single shows promise for the rest of the album and I am looking forward to
hearing it when it is released.
